Radioactive waste compactor, esp. for waste from nuclear power plant fuel element ponds

An arrangement for compacting radioactive waste, esp. from fuel element ponds in nuclear power plants, consists of a hydraulic press (14,22,28,34) with a steel plate insert which compresses the waste in an open container (20) using a hydraulic press stamper (34) acting against an abutment (14). The press is upright and has a common opening (18) for the waste (16), the container (20) and for the removal of compressed waste. The containers are compressed with the waste and have openings for water. A lid (24) is used to close the container and is located below the abutment (14). The water outlet is near the abutment in the press chamber wells (22).
