Biological decontamination of building materials or soils from, e.g. tar

Decontaminating a material such as soil or building materials, contaminated with tar material agglomerates, esp. those contg. polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, comprises: (a) heating the contaminated material to the m.pt. of the tar agglomerate; (b) crushing the heated material by intensive mixing and, as a result of the mixing shear forces, the fluid tar agglomerate is smeared onto the surfaces of the crushed material particles, and (c) opt. incubating and reacting the material with microorganisms.
