Testing of a honeycomb catalytic converter is carried out by monitoring the variation with time of the local temp. in at least one region in the converter while normal operation of the converter is affected by deliberate change of one or more of its operating parameters and the space- and/or time-dependent temp. variation is detected in the region. Pref. the operating parameter is one or more of hydrocarbon concn., oxygen concn. and nitrogen concn. in the flow entering the converter. Parameter change and temp. variation detection are carried out at a constant engine load. USE/ADVANTAGE - The condition and/or functional capability of an i.e. engine catalytic converter, esp. a small initial catalyst, can be determined in a simple, inexpensive and precise manner.
