The water-soluble basis lacquer overspray from a spray application process is used for the prepn. of a stone strike resistant layer (II) between the electro-coat (I) and basis lacquer (III) layers, which is dried at 50-90 deg C. Also claimed are the following: (i) stone strike resistant lacquers contg. basis lacquer overspray, binders, pigments, organic solvents and additives; (ii) prepn. of (I) by removing water from cabin effluent contg. uncoagulated water-soluble basis lacquer to give a solids content of ca. 10-35 wt.% and then mixing with additives; (iii) lacquering process for car bodywork using a basecoat of (I), second 10-20 micron thick layer of (II), third layer of water-soluble basis lacquer (III), and a transparent lacquer covering layer (IV); and (iv) lacquering process for car bodywork by firing a basecoat of (I), then applying (II) and drying it at 50-90 deg C, and then applying a water-soluble basis lacquer layer (III) and drying it at 50-100 deg C, before applying (IV) and finally firing all three layers (II)-(IV) at 130-160 deg C.
