The radio device consists of a portable device (1) and a booster (2) which can be connected to it. The device can be operated at different power levels in portable and stationary operation. It has devices for detecting connection of the booster to the portable device. The portable device contains circuitry (4,9) which, on detecting connection of the booster, bridges over an amplifier (5) in the reception path or reduces its gain and transfers the function performed by the amplifier to a preamplifier within the booster.
