A method for characterising textiles/items of clothing in the sense of "tested for hazardous substances", by means of bioindication by a bacteria inhibition assay whose sensitivity has been verified, as "tolerable in this sense". For this purpose, an aqueous extract of the sample (1 part of test material: 20 parts of water, extracted in an ultrasonic bath for 15 minutes) is made sterile by adding hydrochloric acid, subsequently neutralized and subjected in a buffered medium to a bacterial conversion. For example, in a medium containing dimethyl sulphoxide and a bacterium which is preferably a facultative anaerobe, the liberation of dimethyl sulphide is measured after a defined time. The latter can be detected by gas chromatography or voltammetry. In another case, the inhibition of bioluminescence after a certain time, for example 5 or 30 minutes, is measured and compared with a blank. Information about an inhibiting and thus harmful action is derived from the metabolic event, for example the formation of dimethyl sulphide from dimethyl sulphoxide or the bioluminescence, where appropriate derived from a comparison with a blank test without material sample. At and above an inhibition of 20% with a 1:20 extract, the result is to be stated to be significantly compromising in this sense.
