The device includes a unit for transmitting alarm information in the form of speech. The spoken information is stored in a speech memory of the device to be output in response to specific information from sensors. The device is preferably a telephone (10) or modem and has a dial to output the spoken information to a called telephone station. The device preferably includes one or a combination of sensors to generate an input signal for the alarm device, responding to detected heat, water, open doors or windows etc. The device may include a circuit which is actuated either by a device associated with a telephone or a device worn on the body. The latter may have a keypad to be worn around the neck.
