The data compression system is used for radar data with a constant standard deviation and mean value with a given data block, the input data initially subjected to an adaptive block quantisation for determining the standard deviation. A shift register is used to provide vectors from the block quantised data, which are coded via a special imaging table (1.3), to obtain effective data reduction. Pref. the vectors are obtained from the coded data during decompression of the latter using a code book table, with scalar values obtained from the vectors using a shift register, which are normalised before multiplication with the standard deviation for each block.
