Processing of a side prod. stream comprising mainly polar organic cpds., arising in the direct oxidn. of cyclohexane to adipic acid in presence of acetic acid and of Co catalysts, involves removal of the acetic acid and the dissolved catalysts, addn. of 20-80 wt.% aq. HNO3 used in amt. of 0.8-4 mols of HNO3 w.r.t. 100 g of by-prods., followed by oxidn. at 40-120 deg C and isolation of the dicarboxylic acids from the resulting reaction mixt.
