The impact energy absorber is used to improve vehicle passenger safety. It is fitted between the body of the vehicle and e.g. a safety belt (2), steering column, pedal or dashboard. The impact energy absorber consists of a sheet metal strip (4), pref. U-shaped, extending in the impact force direction (3), and has its body-fixed end folded back around a pin (6). In crash situations the metal strip can slide w.r.t. the pin over a limited distance.
