Different end-modified alpha, omega-polymethacrylate dicarboxylic acids, their production and use as a dicarboxylic acid component for the production or modification of polyesters, polyurethanes or polyepoxides
Alpha,omega-polymethacrylate-dicarboxylic acids of formula (I) are claimed: R1 = opt. halogenated 1-22C alkyl; R2 = COOH-terminated residue of a known chain regulator; a = at least 4. Also claimed is a process for the prodn. of (I) by radical polymerisation of methacrylate esters of formula CH2=CMe-COOR1 (II) in the presence of chain regulators with terminal -COOR4 gps. (with R4 = H or 1-4C alkyl) to give a polymer of formula followed by mild hydrolysis with 1-2 moles alkali hydroxide (for R4 and R1 = alkyl) and neutralisation with acid. Used for the prodn. or modification of polyepoxides, polyesters, polyamides, alkyd resins or polyurethanes (claimed). Applications include epoxy resin adhesives, glass fibre prepregs for the prodn. of laminates, e.g. for printed circuits, boat building, car body repairs etc., paint compsns. and casting resins. Enables the simple prodn. of COOH-terminated polymethacrylates contg. no cpds. with a functionality less than or greater than 2. Epoxy resins modified with (I) have improved adhesive strength etc.
