For the purposes of adhesive book-binding, an apparatus (1) for a book-binding machine for producing grooves on the spine of a book-block (2) is used. This apparatus consists of a counter-holder (8) which can be rotated about an axis perpendicular to the book-block spine and, by means of a cylindrical support surface (9), counteracts the unhinging (7) of the book block (2) above a guide plate (11).
