The invention relates to a process for the disposal of fluorobromocarbons or fluorochlorobromocarbons (described as halons hereinafter) or their mixtures with fluorocarbons (FC) or chlorofluorocarbons (CFC). The process comprises the thermal dissociation of halons or halon-containing FCs or halon-containing CFCs, for example by means of an oxyhydrogen flame, cooling the gas stream formed in the process, oxidising the hydrogen bromide formed in the dissociation by feeding in an excess of elemental chlorine into the gas stream, to give bromine, absorbing the resulting HF and HCl from the gas stream to obtain hydrofluoric acid and hydrochloric acid and finally separating elemental bromine and chlorine by distillation or reducing both to the salts.
