Sulfonium compounds of the formula 1 or 2 are described: IMAGE in which R denotes a mononuclear cycloalkyl radical having 3 to 8 ring carbon atoms or a mononuclear cycloalkyl radical having 3 to 8 ring carbon atoms to which at least one further ring containing carbon atoms is fused, X denotes a non-nucleophilic anion and Z denotes a single bond, an oxygen or sulphur atom, a group of the formula 2bLS(+)-R X(-), in which R and X likewise have the abovementioned meaning, 2bLC=O or a methylene bridge, where the compounds are either unsubstituted or have one or more substituents which are selected from the group consisting of halogen, nitro, C1-C8-alkyl, phenyl, hydroxyl, C1-C8-alkoxy, phenoxy, benzyloxy, alkoxycarbonyl having 1-4 C atoms in the alkoxy radical or acyl having 1-12 C atoms. The compounds are particularly suitable as thermal curing agents for cationically polymerisable material.
