Medicinal or cosmetic compsns. (I) for use against lice, comprise a mixt. of insecticides and antioxidants at 0.5-10 wt.%. The compsn. is obtd. and stabilised by dilution and suspension of the active ingredients in an aq. or hydro-organic base. It is in the form of lotions, shampoos, milks, gels, collars or hair accessories. For use against fleas it contains essential oils at 2-10 wt.% associated with antioxidants at 0.1-5 wt.%. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are used to treat infestations of lice(pediculus capitis) and their nits and related parasites (p. humans and p. pubis) in man and animals, and in animals, partic. dogs and cats, to reduce or destroy fleas and ticks. (I) can be used in a delayed release form in animal collars, head-bands and the side-pieces of spectacles. Compsns. of prior art pose problems of insecticide resistance, local intolerance, bad odour and in the destruction of nits, limited efficacy. The antioxidants in (I) interfere with sclerotization and hence envelope formation in the nit, glue to the hair and exoskeleton formation. Thus the sensitivity to insecticides is increased possibly allowing reduced dosages.
