Plunger is used with a vessel (1) for the vacuum treatment of steel, in partic. for vacuum decarburisation, and comprises a cylindrical metal collar (8) coated internally and externally with a refractory lining (9,10). The plunger is designed to be partially immersed in the bath of steel (6) to be treated. It incorporates some feed channels (13) for a neutral gas that penetrates into the external refractory lining (10) at the level of the upper part of the plunger that is not immersed in the bath (6) and descends the length of the collar (8) to about the lower end of this collar (8). The feed channels (13) are uniformly distributed around the periphery of the collar (8) and each (13) communicates with two horizontally driven tuyeres (14), crossing the collar (8) and the inner refractory lining (9) of the plunger in order to emerge inside the plunger. The vessel used for the treatment of steel under vacuum is also claimed.
