A process for the optical characterization of an optical instrument comprises an optical system having a focal plane (f), comprising an input pupil, a field of view is centered on an optical axis (v - v), and a detection assembly (13) occupying a predetermined position fixed in the focal plane, so as to receive the image of the beams entering into the entrance pupil according to a predetermined aiming direction (z - z), according to which it sends to the entrance pupil the image at infinity of an object - test (15) and the measurement signals generated by the detection system, characterized in that it generates the test to the inside of the optical instrument, in the focal plane of the optical system and in the direction of the optical system, and it is available on the path of the parallel light rays issuing from the entry pupil a plane mirror (20) is oriented so as to reflect the light rays parallel to the entrance pupil of the sighting direction that is predetermined (z - z).
