The charging method involves performing two operating modes, the first being constant current mode and the second being a constant voltage mode. Choice of mode is automatically selected as function of the value of the charging voltage relative to a set threshold. The constant current mode is used when the voltage is below the threshold, and the constant voltage mode when above the threshold. The start of charging is controlled to have a soft start, with an increasing average current. The end of the constant current phase is detected from the time derivative of the voltage, by measuring the temperature or internal pressure, or the time derivative of temperature. The end of the second phase is detected from the time derivative of current, the charging time or temperature and pressure in the accumulator.
