The patient stands upright on a platform (10) with his feet in predetermined positions (12). The platform is mounted by springs in a fixed frame (14), so that it has three degrees of freedom. A centre of gravity detector (20) provides its vertical projection of the patient about the predetermined position. This data is analysed in a microprocessor (24) programme. A display (28), connected to the microprocessor, provides the results of the patient's vestibular perception. The platform may be locked (32) partially or completely. The centre of gravity detector may be formed by three balances, connected around the feet position, to determine the weight proportion at the supports. This detector may provide an analogue output to be digitised (22) for use by the microprocessor.
