Compounds of the formula: Ar-L-(*) m in which Ar represents a substantially planar, fused ring system which contains at least 4 aromatic rings and which is of formula: n is 0 (ie the CH group is absent and the adjacent C atoms are directly bonded) or 1 (ie R' is absent); O means that the surrounding ring is aromatic when n is 1 and non-aromatic when n is 0; p is 0 (ie R 5 and the bonds attached thereto are absent) or I, provided that p is O when n is O; R 1 and R 2 , on the one hand, and R 3 and R 4 , on the other hand, are such so that each forms a fused aromatic ring system together with the carbon atoms to which they are attached; R' is hydrogen or an alkyl group; R 5 is a group which, together with the atoms to which it is attached, forms one or more supplementary rings; L is a stable chain having at least two atoms in which the atoms are independently selected from carbon, oxygen, sulphur, nitrogen and phosphorus, where appropriate the chain atoms being optionally substituted by one or more C 1-6 alkyl groups which may be the same or different, one or more chain atoms optionally forming part of one or more aromatic or heteroaromatic groups and where a carbon is adjacent to a nitrogen atom the carbon atom being optionally substituted by an oxygen atom; * is a radical with at least one chiral centre, including an ion pair where the chiral centre is present in the ion which is not covalently bonded to L; and m is 1, 2 or 3. Graphite material on which such compounds are adsorbed; a chamber containing such material; processes for the separation of enantiomers using such compounds and graphite material; and kits for separating enantiomers comprising a chamber, such compounds and graphite material are also claimed.
