Apparatus for mode discrimination in laser applications. A laser operating at a wavelength &lgr;c may have an undesired mode operating at &lgr;e. Mirrors are constructed such that the loss induced in the undesired mode by the wavelength centering of at least one of the mirrors exceeds the available gain of the laser.
