PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently manage required memory capacity at an MPEG compatible image signal decoder. ;SOLUTION: This decoder is provided with a frame memory 20 for storing a pixel block reconstructed with a decoding process. Data, for which compression is canceled before, are recompressed 30 and written in a memory later. Concerning the stored compressed data, the compression is canceled for display 34 and 36 or the compression is canceled when these data are required for encoding functions such as motion compensating processes 32 and 22. The compression to be performed before the write of data into the memory is compression to be performed for the unit of a block while using compression data from one of two different compression paths for simultaneously compressing applied pixel blocks.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1997,JPO
