PURPOSE: To reduce the quantity of a catalyst without deteriorating productivity and to simplify a post treatment process after a reaction by making a phenol derivative in which a phenolic hydroxyl group forms sulfonic ester. ;CONSTITUTION: When sulfuric acid and phenol are reacted in a mole ratio of 2-4:1 and at temperature of 50-100°C, an alkylation catalyst for an aromatic compound prepared from a phenol derivative having a sulfo group on an aromatic nucleus and in which a phenolic hydroxyl group forms sulfonic ester is obtained. In the alkylation catalyst, disulfate having two or three sulfo groups on an aromatic nucleus such as trisulfonated phenoldisulfate and disulfonated phenoldisulfate is especially preferable because of its high catalytic activity. A tertiary olefin and phenol are reacted at 50-140°C in the presence of the catalyst to obtain a tertiry alkylphenol.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1997,JPO
