PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce an asymmetrical cobalt Schiff base complex useful as an oxygen absorbing and activating agent or the like excellent in solubility in an organic solvent, adsorbing properties of oxygen, etc., by reacting a salicylaldehyde derivative with tetramethylethylenediamine and further reacting the resultant product with a divalent cobalt salt. ;SOLUTION: This new asymmetrical cobalt Schiff base complex includes a pyridyl group of formula I [R1 is (2-pyridylalkylenoxy)methyl-1-propenyl, 2-, 3- or 4-pyridyloxyalkylenoxy or N-pyridylalkyl-N-methylaminomethyl; R2 and R3 are each H, a (substituted)phenyl, a (substituted)alkyl, a halogen or a (substituted)alkoxy; Me is methyl] and is useful as an oxygen absorbing and activating agent or the like excellent in solubility in an organic solvent and adsorbability of oxygen. The complex is obtained by reacting a salicylaldehyde derivative having a pyridyl group of formula II with tetramethylethylenediamine of formula III and further reacting the resultant product with cobalt acetate tetrahydrate.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1997,JPO
