PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for appraising a coal quality capable of appraising a wide range of the variation of the coal from a caking coal to a non-or a slightly caking coal, quantitatively under non heating condition. ;SOLUTION: This method for appraising a coal quality is to obtain a relationship between relaxation times of an aliphatic functional group peak in 13C- unclear magnetic resonance absorption spectra of various coals with strengths of cokes after a dry distillation of the coals in a coke oven beforehand, and obtain a relaxation time of the aliphatic group peak by measuring the nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum of the coal to be loaded into the coke even. From the relationship between the relaxation time and the coke strength, the coke strength of the loading coal is estimated. Also, a relationship between the relaxation time of a methyl group peak among the aliphatic functional groups and the strength of the coke after the dry distillation of the coal, is used.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1997,JPO
