PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce both a glass composite material stably usable as a structural material member in a temperature region of about ≤1,000°C and a raw material powder for sintering thereof. ;SOLUTION: This high-strength and high-toughness glass composite material comprises an oxide-based glass as a matrix and flat ductile metal and ceramic whiskers and/or inorganic staple fibers as a reinforcing phase. This composite material is obtained by using a glass composite powder containing the oxide- based glass powder and ceramic whiskers and/or inorganic staple fibers sticking to the surface of the flat ductile metallic powder as a starting raw material, forming the resultant mixed powder and then sintering the formed powder at 200-1,800°C.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1997,JPO
