PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a Cu-Zn based methanol synthesis catalyst having high activity and also durability by reducing an Oolicalcite complexed basic carbonate consisting of Cu and Zn with hydrogen-containing gas as a methanol synthesis catalyst. ;SOLUTION: An aqueous liquid containing soluble Cu-salt and soluble Zn-salt is mixed with an aqueous liquid containing alkali carbonate or alkali hydrogencarbonate and the produced precipitate is recovered. The Oolicalcite complexed basic carbonate consisting of Cu and Zn is reduced with the hydrogen-containing gas as it is or after sintering. Then Cu oxide and Zn oxide are reduced to metallic Cu and Zn and the Cu-Zn based catalyst for methanol synthesis, especially methanol synthesis in a liquid phase, having high activity and durability, is produced.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1997,JPO
