PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a nonwoven fabric for a FRP base material applicable to artificial marble or the like having high transparency and excellent decoration effect by making sheets with a material mainly comprising fibers of elliptic cross section through the wet process. ;SOLUTION: Glass fibers having an elliptic cross section of ≥2 major axis to minor axis ratio are dispersed in an aqueous solution containing a polyethylene oxide dispersant, in addition, when necessary, colored fibers such as carbon fibers, a filter such as aluminum hydroxide and whiskers such as titan-potassium whiskers are admixed, and a binder such as an epoxy resin are formulated in an amount of 5-30wt.%, preferably 10-20wt.%. Then, the slurry is subjected to wet sheet-making process to prepare a nonwoven fabric for FRP base material containing ≥50wt.% of fibers of elliptic cross section. Then, the nonwoven fabric is impregnated with a thermosetting resin such as an epoxy resin or melamine resin or a thermoplastic resin such as polycarbonate or poly(methyl methacrylate) as a matrix resin to form the objective FRP structure.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1997,JPO
