PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To miniaturize the whole of a thermostat, and also to miniaturize the whole of the oil block in which it is built in by using a member of a shape memory alloy. ;SOLUTION: A thermostat is provided with a fitting part 100 fitted inside a cross-flow penetrating hole 10 in an oil block, a valve element 102 that is movably fitted to the fitting part 100 through a shaft 101 and also that opens or closes the communicating port 10 between the communicating port 10 and an oil discharge port 9, and a shape-memory-alloy member 103 for operating the valve element 102 and 8 bias spring 107. When the temperature of the engine oil is low, the communicating hole by means of the valve element 102 is opened by the contraction of the shape memory alloy member 103, and when the engine oil temperature is high, the shape memory alloy member 103 is extended, and the communication hole by means of the valve element 102 is closed.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1997,JPO
