PURPOSE: To measure the specific gravity in saturated surface-dry condition of wet sand without setting the sand in a saturated surface-dry state by finding the weight of a prescribed volume of a mixture of sand and water, weight of water in terms of an aqueous solution having a different specific gravity, and specific gravity of the aqueous solution separated from the mixture. ;CONSTITUTION: After sand is put in a container 1 and water is poured in the container 1 until the surface level of the water reaches a mark 3, the content of the container 1 is agitated and a sucking device 7 is operated to such the water through a nozzle 8 until the surface level of the water reaches a level 1A and the mixture of sand and water becomes a prescribed volume L1. The weight WS of the volume L1 of the mixture is found by subtracting the weight F1 of the container 1 from the gross weight W1 of the container 1 containing the sand and water. Then the temperature T1w of the water is measured and the specific gravity ρw of the water is found on the temperature T1w. Thereafter, the water is discharged from the container 1 and a prescribed aqueous solution (e.g. a potassium carbonate solution having a specific gravity of about 1.5) is poured in the container 1 and agitated. After agitation, the weight WE of the aqueous solution and sand is found similarly to the water and a prescribed volume L2 of the solution is transferred to another container. Then the weight W2H of the transferred solution is measured and the specific gravity ρE of the solution is found from the volume L2 and weight W2H. Finally, the specific gravity ρ of the sand in saturated surface-dry state is obtained by performing calculation on each measured value.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1996,JPO
