PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new compound useful as a polymerizable surfactant and a paper additive. ;SOLUTION: This N-monoallyl-substituted oligopropenylsuccinic acid half amide compound is expressed by formula I, formula II (R1 and R2 are each H or a group of formula III; (n) is 0-6; M is H, an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal, ammonium or an organic base), etc. The compound is a hydrophobic compound soluble in organic solvents and is also an amphiphatic compound exhibiting water-solubility or water-dispersibility according to the pH, temperature conditions, etc., owing to carbonyl group and amide group existing in the molecule. It is polymerizable with various vinyl compounds and useful as a raw material for synthetic resins. Especially a copolymer with (meth) acrylamide is useful as a paper additive soluble or dispersible in water and having excellent paper-strengthening property and sizing performance. The compound of formula I or formula II can be produced by using an oligopropenylsuccinic anhydride as a raw material and reacting with allylamine or diallylamine in the absence of solvent or in an organic solvent.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1997,JPO
