PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make the simultaneous compensation of both of a twisted structure occurring in a liquid crystal cell and refractive index anisotropy possible in order to lessen the dependency of a liquid crystal display on visual sensation by twist orienting and immobilizing discoid liquid crystals. SOLUTION: The film obtd. by immobilizing the orientation state of the liquid crystals in a liquid crystal state is formed of the discoid liquid crystal material. The orientation form of the discoid liquid crystals is twist orientation. Namely, the discoid liquid crystalline material is used and the twist orientation which the liquid crystals form in a liquid crystal state, more specifically the orientation form having the twisted structure are immobilized without impairing the orientation form. This liquid crystal display element is composed of an upper polarizing plate 1, a compensation film 2, the liquid crystal cell 3, a lower polarizing plate 4, an upper substrate 5 of the liquid crystal cell 3, a lower substrate 6 of the liquid crystal cell 3, transparent electrodes 7, an oriented film 8 and nematic liquid crystals 9.
