PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To feed a tapelike recording medium normally and reliably by providing a control means for driving a tape traveling mechanism in the direction opposite to that at the time of recording before starting a recording using a record head and carrying the tape-like recording medium oppositely to the recording direction. ;SOLUTION: Since the tape cassette 7 of a tape recorder 1 is loaded with the side face thereof facing the front face 3 of a body 2 separably, height of the front face 3, and thereby the thickness, can be decreased and the tape cassette 7 can be loaded/unloaded in a limited operating space. When the tape cassette 7 is loaded in a VTR 72, cassette insertion port 4 of the tape recorder 1 can be arranged in the front face 73 of apparatus and an operating section 76 for performing various operations of the VTR 72, also serving as an operating section 48 for manually introducing record information, can be arranged. Since the area of the front face 73 of standing VTR 72 does not increase significantly, the tape cassette 7 can be loaded/unloaded easily even under a state where the VTR 72 is contained in a rack.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1997,JPO
