PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an aq. dispersion of core-shell composite particles having satisfactory dispersion stability and a high degree of coating of the surfaces of silica particles with an org. polymer while suppressing the formation of particles of only the polymer by bringing colloidal silica and specified silane into a coupling reaction in an aq. medium in the presence of a dispersion stabilizer and then polymerizing a specified vinyl monomer in the medium. ;SOLUTION: Colloidal silica and organoalkoxysilane are brought into a coupling reaction in an aq. medium in the presence of a dispersion stabilizer and then a vinyl monomer having at least one ethylenically unsatd. group is polymerized in the medium to obtain the objective aq. dispersion in which ≥80% of the particles are core-shell composite particles using colloidal silica as the cores and an org. polymer as the shells.
