PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a shut down caused by the occurrence of an overcurrent in a thyristor converter. ;SOLUTION: When a failure occurred to a cycloconverter 3 during a start-up, a failure signal 3a is transmitted from the cycloconverter 3 to an AC exciting system controlling device 4, blocking the gate controlling signal from the cycloconverter 3 to be turned off. A failure signal 3b of the cycloconverter 3 blocks the gate controlling signal of a thyristor converter 7 to stop the thyristor converter 7 before an exciting current disappears. The effect of the armature reaction is left undiminished before the stop of the thyristor converter 7 and the occurrence of an overcurrent is prevented in the thyristor converter 7.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1997,JPO
