PURPOSE: To provide a self-lubricating mica-graphite, composite material which, in particular, has a low coefficient of friction and excellent strengths. ;CONSTITUTION: A self-lubricating composite material (a) comprises 40 to 70vol% mica matrix and both of 30 to 60vol% graphite particles and 1 to 30vol% hexagonal boron nitride particles homogeneously dispersed as a solid lubricating component in the mica matrix. A metal inert to the above material, such as tin, copper, or nickel, is dispersed in an amt. of 1 to 10vol% based on the total volume in the grain boundary between the graphite and the hexagonal boron nitride in the self-lubricating composite material (a) to prepare a self-lubricating composite material (b) having enhanced sliding properties. A glass phase of an oxide or a halide of a group 1 to 4 nontransition metal, such as LiF, CaO, B2O3, or SiO2, is bonded to a part or the whole of the grain boundary between the solid lubricating agent (a) and the mica matrix to provide a self-lubricating composite material (c) having excellent mechanical properties.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1996,JPO
