PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for adjusting refractive index of a self-preservation type which easily adjusts the refractive index of an optical waveguide and does not require any energy for maintaining the resulted refractive index, an optical waveguide adjustable in refractive index and a process for producing the refractive index adjusting optical waveguide formed by using the optical waveguide. ;SOLUTION: At least a part of the core 1 or clad 5 of the optical waveguide is subjected to at least one operations among irradiating with energy rays, impression of a voltage, impression of a current, heating, cooling, pressurizing, pressure reducing, impression of a magnetic field and impregnation or doping with a material, there by, the part is provided with the org. compd. 4 changeable in refractive index. The refractive index of the org. compd. is changed by executing at least one of the operations described above. The optical waveguide adjustable in refractive index is manufactured by providing the core and/or clad of the optical waveguide with the org. compd 4.
