PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce a wattless current flowing in non-selected element, in energizing and activating a surface conduction electron emitting element of a multielectron source. ;SOLUTION: In a control part 104, all elements of a substrate 101 are selected by a line selection part 102 and a pixel selection part 106, after a high resistanced pulse is applied, a line in a line-direction is successively selected by the line selection part 102, to this line, -Vf/2 potential and Vf/2 pulse potential from the pixel selection part 106 are applied. Here, by a current detection part 107, a current value flowing in this wiring is measured, when this current comes to a prescribed value, energizing and activating of this element is considered to be ended.
