PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently suppress the generation of a nonlinear optical effect and to improve the transmission quality of wavelength multiplex signals by executing polarization scrambling by respectively different frequencies or differ ent polarization directions to the signal light of plural channels. ;SOLUTION: Respective signal light transmission parts 12-1 to 12-4i generate and transmit the signal light of different wavelengths respectively for the plural channels ch.1-ch.4i to be wavelength multiplexed. In this case, the respective signal light transmission parts 12-1 to 12-4i, are divided into an odd-numbered channel group and an even-numbered channel group and respective multiplexers 13-1 to 13-6 and 16 wavelength-multiplex the signal light from the respective signal light transmission parts 12-1 to 12-4i by multiplexing the respectively inputted plural pieces of the signal light. Then, while holding the straight polarization of each signal light from the signal light transmission parts 12-1 to 12-4i of the respective channels, the signal light is propagated and the signal light is multiplexed while holding it.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1997,JPO
