PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To continuously racemize enantiomers of benzyl alcohol, its ethers and esters in a high efficiency and a high yield by allowing them to pass through a specific solid acid under their racemization conditions. ;SOLUTION: An enantiomer of a compound of the formula (R1 and R2 are different from each other and stand for H, an alkyl, a cycloalkyl, a 1-10C aromatic group, a haloalkyl; Y is H, a 1-6C lower alkyl, an aryl, a carboxyl having 1 to 6 carbon atoms; R, is H, a 1-6C lower alkyl) is passed through a solid acid, namely a strongly acidic ion-exchange substance, to fluidize the solid acid under the conditions effective for racemization at 20-350°C, preferably at 20-150°C. The strong acid ion-exchange substance is preferably a cationic ion-exchange resin, silica gel bearing sulfonic acid groups bonded thereto or polysilsesquinoxane having strong acid groups.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1997,JPO
