PURPOSE: To provide a gas humidifying method in which a humidification can be automatically and properly performed with good efficiency without using a bubbler heated by a heater, and a PEM type fuel cell can be made compact. CONSTITUTION: A gas is passed to one surface of a gas humidifying plate of humidifying area consisting of a porous carbon plate 1 or laminated carbon paper the circumference of which is gas-sealed, and water which cooled the stack of generating area is passed to the other surface with a pressure slightly higher than the gas to humidify the gas. A gas humidifier 12 is formed by laminating and fastening a number of gas humidifying plates having gas impermeable parts in the circumference of the porous carbon plate or laminated carbon paper and the vicinity of inlets and outlets of gas and water and a gas permeable part in the inside, the gas permeable part having a gas passing part on one surface and a water passing part on the other surface.
