PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain X-ray amorphous and nanocrystalline metal powder by bringing the halide of the group IB to VIII metals in the Periodic Table into reaction with the metallic hydrides of alkali metals in an organic solvent under grinding. SOLUTION: The halides of the group IB, IVB and VIIIB metals in the Periodic Table are brought into reaction with the hydrides of alkali metals or hydrides of alkaline-earth metals in an organic solvent under common grinding to produce X-ray amorphous and nanocrystalline metal powder. As the hydrides, e.g. magnesium hydride, which is obtd. by adding Mg to be hydrogenated with magnesium hydride as a catalyst, in the initial hydrogenation, and executing hydrogenation under the common stirring of the reactant, is used. The magnesium hydride is non-inflammable, is free from the tendency of being ignited even in the contact with mineral acid and is excellent in safety handling.
