Control manner and its control unit null of the signal for picture quality compensation in EDTV

PURPOSE:To prevent a user from having a feeling that a picture quality compensation signal is obstructive by attenuating the amplitude of the picture quality compensation signal in an EDTV signal in the case of the average value of the signal level of the main screen part smaller than a prescribed value. CONSTITUTION:An average value detecting part 3 to which a video signal is inputted obtains the average value of the signal level of a main screen part A in the inputted EDTV signal and outputs this average value to a picture quality compensation signal attenuating part 4. This part 4 attenuates the picture quality compensation signal of the inputted EDTV signal to output the EDTV signal if the inputted average value is larger than the prescribed value, that is, if a floating-up phenomenon occurs on the reception side to give a feeling that the picture quality compensation signal is obstructive in a no-picture part. Thus, the user doesn't have this feeling even in the case of a TV receiver whose DC reproducing circuit has an insufficient performance.
