PURPOSE:To light a lamp at high effectiveness and brightness by providing a diode connected between the other end of a cathode filament and the anode, and a pulse signal source of which the proportion of a switching element to one period is 5% or more and 70% or less and opening duration is 150musec or less in one cycle. CONSTITUTION:The following units are provided: a resonance circuit 11 composed of the parallel circuits of an inductance 12, connected to the one end of the cathode filament 3b of a rare gas discharge fluorescent lamp 8, and a condenser 13; a series circuit of the parallel circuit of a switching element 14, connected to the anode side of the rare gas discharge fluorescent lamp 8, and a diode 17, and a D.C. power source; the diode connected to the other end of the cathode filament and the anode side of the rare gas discharge fluorescent lamp; and a pulse signal source 15 of which the proportion of the switching element 14 to one cycle is 5% or more and 70% or less, and opening duration is 150musec or less in one cycle. Consequently a cathode filament 3b can be preheated without the need for providing another preheating power source. Thus, a highly bright and effective rare gas discharge fluorescent lamp device can be obtained.
