PURPOSE:To prevent the generation of excess current induced by slag adhesion and moreover reduce the service cycle of furnace bottom electrodes by improving the current density of said furnace bottom electrode, and stabilizing arcs as well. CONSTITUTION:A large number of furnace bottom electrodes 30 are grouped into a plurality of electrode units 1. Each electrode unit 1 is insulated from each other and buried in furnace bottom refractories 28. Power is supplied to each electrode unit 1 independently where each current is controlled on an individual dasis so that sophisticated operation may be carried out.
