PURPOSE: To obtain a laminar silicate salt enabling to introduce various strongly bonded guest compounds thereinto and useful as a raw material for composite materials by selecting a laminar silicate having a swellable plate-like structure and having specific OH groups. ;CONSTITUTION: The laminar silicate salt having a swellable plate-like layer structure and having reactive OH groups on the outer surfaces and on the surfaces of the inner layers is selected. The laminar silicate salt can preferably be produced by suspending a 2:1 type swellable laminar silicate salt (e.g. synthetic swellable fluoromica) in water to swell the salt with water, freezing or lyophilizing the swollen salt to hold the swollen structure, and subsequently treating the product with low temperature plasma in a steam-containing atmosphere (e.g. steam and Ar). The OH groups on the outer surfaces of the laminer silicate salt and on the surfaces of the inner layers are chemically bonded to an organic compound having a functional group capable of reacting with the OH groups (e.g. butanol) to obtain the organic monolayer silicate salt complex.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1996,JPO
