For the quicker heating of the burner plate of a hob with a glass ceramic cooking surface and a radiant gas burner, the radiant gas burner is operated with an increased gas quantity during the heating phase. At the latest on reaching the operating temperature in full- load setting, the gas quantity is throttled to the normal size. The throttling moment can either be stipulated via a timer or the temperature of the burner plate can be determined and the gas quantity throttled at a predetermined temperature.
