A method of determination of taxol as active component in extracts from yew tree particularly from needles, consisting of spreading extract samples on a plate with silica gel and developing a chromatogram with a solvent or a solvent mixture, characterised by that 10 - 20 ml, 3 - 6 mm long and 1 - 1.5 mm wide extract samples from yew tree needles in a crude form are applied on a HPTLC plate covered with silica gel, and the chromatogram is developed at the length of 7 cm in a horizontal chromatographic chamber applying a two-stage gradient with the use of solvents composed of the following: 60 percent v/v mixture solution A in heptane is used in the first stage of the gradient at the distance of 3.5 cm, where v/v methanol solution in chloroform constitutes mixture A, and 70 percent v/v mixture solution A in heptane with the mixture composition as above at the second stage of the gradient at the distance of 3.5 cm.
