The speed meter has two annular coils (3) mounted at a defined separation distance (a) on a carrying tube and carrying a constant current. The coils are connected to evaluation electronics. Each coil is enclosed by a U-shaped, ferro- or ferri-magnetic annular body (4) for guiding the magnetic field. The coils allow the passage of a shell (2) emanating from a barrel (1). The annular bodies are arranged to be magnetically open w.r.t. an extended barrel axis (5), and symmetrical w.r.t. a coil centre plane (6). The U-shaped body can be made in one piece or from several parts. Annular surfaces (4.1,4.2) terminating the arms of the U-shaped body face the extended barrel axis and lie parallel to it.
