A tertiary butyl hydroperoxide reaction product isdistilled to provide a tertiary butyl alcohol distillationfraction comprising tertiary butyl alcohol and a heavierfraction comprising unreacted tertiary butyl hydroperoxide,and reaction by-products boiling below tertiary butylalcohol, the tertiary butyl alcohol fraction is charged toa vacuum distillation column for separation into avaporized overhead tertiary butyl alcohol fraction that iscooled to obtain a liquefaction product comprising a minoramount of vaporized tertiary butyl alcohol and a majoramount of a liquified tertiary butyl alcohol, and thetertiary butyl alcohol vapors are dissolved in water toform an aqueous solution of tertiary butyl alcohol fromwhich the tertiary butyl alcohol is recovered.
